This book won the Crime Writers’ Association 2019 Golden Dagger and so it came highly recommended. It is another police procedural featuring a Detective Sergeant Washington Poe as the main character. It is very strong on its landscape setting with a series of gruesome murders taking place at different stone circles in the Lake District. I particularly loved his sidekick character, a brilliant but socially awkward young analyst called Tilly Bradshaw and a shocking plot twist when Poe finds his name carved into the chest of one of the victims. This was a real page turner which my father also enjoyed and I have just ordered the sequel Black Summer to keep him entertained during his quarantine.
